Renovated Bookstore Makes its Debut

Nov 30, 2016 | Fall/Winter 2016-17, On Campus

UC Davis’ main bookstore reopened this summer with a new name and look, as well as additional features.

The Campus Store is part of a $23.5 million Memorial Union renovation that aims to make the building more open and spacious, and is due for completion by the spring. The store is the first section to be finished.

Inside, customers will find fitting rooms and a more prominent computer repair station, plus the Amazon@UC Davis store for order pickups and returns.

The store is also better prepared for future changes, with fixtures that can be reconfigured. That’s an important feature, said Jason Lorgan, director of UC Davis Stores, who predicted the store will need less space for textbooks as digital course materials become more prominent. In fact, the Campus Store includes a help desk dedicated to digital materials, including the store’s Inclusive Access program.

The Amazon store, among the first that the online retailer has installed at universities, offers customer service as well as lockers where Amazon Prime and Prime Student members have access to free same-day pickup for orders placed by noon and free one-day pickup for orders placed by 10 p.m.

Amazon will continue to provide UC Davis a share of the proceeds from sales at ucdavis.amazon.com; this arrangement has already generated more than $700,000 for student services, including more than $100,000 for textbook scholarships.
